THE IMPORTANCE OF DISCIPLESHIP AND MENTORING
From the beginning, God’s plan to expand His Kingdom was based on people helping other people understand and follow God through faith. Jesus set an example for what His disciples should do and told them to go and do the same in Matthew 28:18-20, known as “The Great Commission.” We also see the Apostle Paul give Timothy the same charge in 2 Timothy 2:2: “You have heard me teach many things...teach these great truths to trustworthy people who are able to pass them on to others.” (NLT) This is our foundational verse for “222,” the FBC Youth Mentoring Program. It was Paul’s charge to Timothy to “pass the baton” of faith that Paul had given him, and it’s our charge today to help others know and follow the love and life of Jesus through consistent and intentional discipleship through mentoring.
FBC Youth’s vision is to connect students to the love and life of Jesus so that they can become world changers for the glory of God. We help students learn the Truth of the Bible, connect with God and others in meaningful ways, and be involved in opportunities to impact the world around them for Christ. But our time with students is limited to only a couple of interactions each week; through “222,” our students will further develop these values in their life through a consistent and intentional mentoring relationship with a Christian Mentor.
IS MENTORING FOR YOU?
222 requires dedication, reliability, consistency, and a sincere interest in meeting with a Mentor in order to develop your personal character and relationship with Jesus Christ. Mentoring is not preaching or counseling, but rather a meaningful relationship between a Mentor and Mentee in order to help them follow Jesus. Mentors are far from perfect, but they have a passion to follow Jesus and a passion to be used by God to impact their Mentee’s life. A meaningful mentoring relationship is built through consistent meeting times that allow Mentors to get to know their Mentee, listen to their life and interests, and walk with them through the challenges of this stage of their life. It includes intentionally helping a Mentee to develop personally and spiritually by helping them take a step towards God in every area of life.
Mentees should agree to the following Guidelines and Expectations when applying for 222:

- Fully commit to the 222 program and the relationship with a Mentor (this includes being open, honest, and cooperative throughout the commitment time);
- Meet with your Mentor AT LEAST twice a month (about one hour per meeting) for the 2020–2021 school year;
- Contact your Mentor at least one day in advance if you are unable to attend a scheduled Mentoring session, and make every effort to reschedule the missed session within one week; and,
- Notify your Mentor and the 222 Program Leader if you are not able to meet the above requirements.
