Celebrating 20 Years of Camino de Luz
God has given FBC the incredible privilege of serving the El Paso community through Camino de Luz (CdL)—a Spanish-language ministry centered on Bible study, worship, and fellowship. For the past 20 years, as a result of a Disciple Now weekend community assessment, CdL has been a place where individuals and families come together to grow in faith, build lasting relationships, and walk in the light of Christ.
While we could share many statistics about the events and gatherings over the years, what matters most are the stories, like Gloria, who was baptized in the ICU, or Jovita, with whom we were able to pray before she passed away. The lives touched and transformed, the friendships formed, and the ways we've seen God move in and through this community are significant. We have had the joy of witnessing spiritual and emotional growth in many of our participants, and we have been blessed to walk with them through seasons of both joy and sorrow.
What started as a fellowship for senior adults, CdL has blossomed into a lively, multigenerational gathering where grandparents, parents, and children unite to explore God's Word in Spanish and worship together as one community; the idea for the Bible Study came from them! The group itself chose the name "Camino de Luz" (Path of Light), beautifully representing the journey they are on, guided by the light of Christ, and as they learned the importance of prayer for our students and schools; under the leadership of one of the participants, they started Madres Unidas Para Orar.
CdL primarily serves individuals and families from the surrounding El Paso neighborhoods, but we also have participants from Juarez. It has been our joy to offer a welcoming and Christ-centered environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and loved, regardless of their background. We've seen neighbors who once wondered what went on inside "the big grey building" come inside and become a vital part of our church family. For many participants, this is the only way they are receiving the good news of the Gospel; their children and grandchildren can participate in our church's programs, such as VBS, Upward Basketball, and others.
Over the years, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, by meeting through ZOOM, we have witnessed hardened hearts softened by God's mercy, heard testimonies of transformation, and seen CdL participants care for one another with extraordinary compassion. Many have come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, been baptized, and continued their spiritual growth through ongoing discipleship and Bible study.
As we celebrate this 20-year milestone, we are humbled and grateful to be part of God's work in and through Camino de Luz. We thank FBC and those who are part of this unique ministry in any way. We look forward with anticipation to the next chapter and all that God has in store.
To God be the glory!
